4 Easy Things You Can Do Today To Improve Your Skin Health

What if I told you that small changes you make today could mean improved skin health as soon as next month? It’s true—about every 28 days your top layer of skin cells replace themselves. This is awesome because it means that small changes we make now can start having a noticeable impact on our skin fairly quickly. (And who doesn’t love knowing that results are imminent?) This month I want to share 4 easy things you can do TODAY to start taking better care of your skin.

#1: Make sure your moisturizer and/or makeup have SPF

If your current moisturizer or makeup don’t have SPF included, consider getting one that does. You can also go the tinted sunscreen route, which I love for the summer. This Think brand tinted sunscreen is my current favorite. Even if you don’t plan to go outside, it’s still a good idea to always have some sunscreen on your face because windows don’t necessarily filter out all the harmful rays. And please don’t forget: if you’re going to be out in the sun for more than 20 minutes, you should have sunscreen on any exposed skin, too.

#2: Drink enough water

I know, I know. We hear this all the time. But it’s so important! Hydrated skin is happy skin. Did you know that dehydration can cause fine lines to be visible?! That certainly makes me want to grab an extra glass of water. The current recommendation is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water every day. So if you weigh 160lbs, you should be drinking 80oz each day (that’s 10 cups). Does it sound like too much? Don’t get hung up on a specific number. Figure out how much you typically drink in a day and focus on adding just one or two extra cups. Try this for a week and see how you feel.

#3: Eat one extra serving of veggies each day

Most people don’t struggle to eat enough fruit…it’s the veggies that get us. Your body needs plants to support a healthy gut which in turn supports a healthy body. Never underestimate the power of adding more plants to your diet. Even if you already eat a ton, eat more! Per MyPlate.gov, women need between 2-3 cups of vegetables every day. Which veggies are great for your skin? Lots of them! But you might want to try broccoli and bell peppers for extra vitamin C, or sweet potatoes and spinach for beta-carotene and vitamin E.

#4: Consider trying a hot towel scrub

Never heard of it? It’s a wonderful, simple, and relaxing practice that has multiple benefits! Keep reading below for a how-to and the benefits of doing a hot towel scrub.

Simple solutions

When I was first starting to think about coaching, I loved the idea of “simple solutions”. That name was already taken and I really love “At The Well”, but I’m still always drawn to simple changes. We don’t have time in our full lives to make big sweeping changes. For something to become do-able and habit-forming, it has to be sustainable. Small, simple steps are - I believe - the way to get there. So, I hope these four ideas help you on your way to healthier skin and if you’re curious about what simple changes might do for your health, reach out and let’s talk!
